Retention Is the Whole Business
You cannot monetize or scale an app that leaks users. Retention is not a metric to improve later. It is the floor everything else is built on.
Why retention comes before any paywall or ad spend, the two curves that tell you the truth, and what to fix first when they sag.

There is an order to this work, and most teams run it backwards. They chase installs and tune paywalls while users pour out the bottom of a leaky bucket. More installs into a leaky bucket is just a faster leak.
Retain first. Monetize second. Scale last. In that order, or not at all.
Two curves tell the truth
Your retention curve shows how many users are still around on day one, seven, thirty. If it falls off a cliff early, nothing downstream matters yet. Your revenue-per-user curve only means something once the retention curve flattens into a stable base.
A flat tail is the signal you have a product people keep. That base is the only thing a paywall or an ad budget can safely stand on.
Fix the first week first
Most of the leak happens in the first days. The fix is rarely a feature. It is getting the user to the core value faster, before they decide the app is not for them. Shorten the path to the first real win and the whole curve lifts.
Retention is not the boring part before the growth part. It is the business. Everything else is a multiplier on a number that has to be positive first.

- Why does retention come before monetization?
- Because monetizing an app that leaks users just speeds up the loss. A paywall or ad budget only pays off on a base of users who stick around. Flatten the retention curve first, then monetize the base.
- Which retention numbers matter most?
- The shape of the curve, especially early. Day 1 and day 7 tell you whether new users find value fast. A flattening tail tells you there is a real, keepable base to build revenue on.
- Where do most users churn?
- In the first few days, usually before they reach the core value. The highest-leverage fix is shortening the path to the first real win, which lifts the whole curve.
